There is a colonial bias in the database. This is partly a product of our focus on biography. There is very little biographical data available about individual persons living in Australia prior to 1788. Additionally, the distribution of biographies obscures the sharp decline in Australia’s population in the first two decades of colonial settlement, followed by a period of relative stagnation (Butlin 1994).
